As a former prosecutor, Carilyn understands how imperative it is to hire a competent and effective attorney. As a Deputy District Attorney in Orange County California she was required to handle up to eighty cases daily. Carilyn knew exactly which criminal defense attorneys argued their clients cases effectively, which attorneys required the prosecutor to prove their cases beyond a reasonable doubt, and which attorneys had good working relationships with prosecutors.
Effective representation requires a criminal defense attorney to file the correct motions, recognize a Miranda violation or unlawful search and seizure, understand when to request a bond hearing and, importantly, know how to maintain effective relationships with prosecutors. A criminal defense attorney’s familiarity with a specific prosecutor or judge is critical; understanding what district attorney or judge will be handling the case can potentially be the difference between jail or freedom for a client.

Ms. Carilyn Ibsen graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law in 2000. She began her legal practice with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office immediately after having passed the rigorous California Bar exam in the fall of 2000 and following two paid clerkships with the DA’s office during law school in 1999 and 2000. Her schooling included comparative Constitutional Law Classes taught by Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Ms. Ibsen’s undergraduate degree is from the University of California, San Diego in La Jolla, CA. During her coursework there, she interned at the Public Defender’s office in San Diego.
Ms. Ibsen was a Deputy District Attorney (DDA) in Orange County, California for six years. Orange County (population over 3 million) is the second most populous county in California and fifth most populated in the United States. Its population is racially diverse with a broad range of household income, industry, and crime.
While a DDA for Orange County, Ms. Ibsen’s caseload steadily progressed to include all types of criminal cases from misdemeanor petty thefts and driving while intoxicated to serious and violent felonies. Her casework included dozens of criminal jury trials and all types of evidentiary hearings, including motion to suppress evidence, felony preliminary hearings, search warrant motions, and Miranda violations. She wrote and argued a variety of misdemeanor and felony appeals and was effective in settling thousands of cases prior to trial. During her career as a DDA, she earned a reputation as a just but tough trial prosecutor among judges and defense attorneys respectively, and achieved a high success rate of bringing jury trials to a favorable verdict for the prosecution.
Since leaving the District Attorney Office in 2006 to relocate to the Carolinas, Carilyn is using the invaluable tools she gained as a prosecutor to develop a thriving criminal defense practice. With Carilyn’s criminal law experience as a Deputy District Attorney, she is able to distinguish herself as a highly skilled advocate, understanding the perspectives of both defense attorneys and the prosecution.
Carilyn is an active member of the North Carolina Bar, the South Carolina Bar, and admitted to practice in Federal Court, Western District of North Carolina. She is also a member of the Mecklenburg County Bar participating in both the criminal justice section and small firm section.
